How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating Between Washes
A ceramic coating from KW Kustoms gives your car serious protection — but it's not "fit and forget." How you look after it between washes has a big impact on how long that glossy, hydrophobic finish lasts. Here's how to get the most out of it.
1. Stick to the two-bucket wash method
Always use two buckets — one with soapy water, one with clean rinse water for your mitt. This stops you dragging grit back through the soap and onto the paint, which is one of the fastest ways to put fine scratches (swirl marks) into a coated surface.
2. Use a pH-neutral shampoo
Regular supermarket car shampoo can be harsh and strip the coating's hydrophobic properties over time. A pH-neutral, coating-safe shampoo keeps the surface performing the way it should — beading and self-cleaning — for much longer.
3. Rinse before you touch the paint
A pre-wash rinse (or better, a snow foam) loosens dirt and dust before any contact wash, cutting down the amount of grit your mitt has to work over. This one habit does more for swirl-free paint than almost anything else.
4. Dry with a microfibre towel or blower
Air-drying or leaving water to evaporate naturally leads to water spotting, which can etch into the coating over time. A plush microfibre drying towel, or better still a dedicated car dryer/blower, gets the surface dry without dragging or marking it.
5. Top up with a coating booster spray
Most ceramic coatings benefit from an occasional spray sealant or "coating booster" between full washes. It's a quick five-minute job that refreshes the hydrophobic layer and keeps water beading tightly.
6. Avoid automatic car washes
Brush-based automatic washes are one of the quickest ways to damage a coating — the brushes pick up grit from every car before yours and drag it across your paint. Stick to hand washing or a touchless wash if you're ever short on time.
7. Don't ignore contamination
Tar spots, bird droppings, and tree sap should be dealt with promptly with a dedicated remover rather than scrubbed off — leaving them to sit (especially bird droppings, which are acidic) can etch through the coating faster than normal wear.
8. Get it checked annually
